Our Little Chefs SPICE Club: (Special
Program Institute for Culinary Excitement) will give you the support,
guidelines and manuals to start a beginning cooking class and then graduate
to more advanced classes—preparing meals as they develop more proficiency in
the kitchen. Studies and practical experiences range from basic cooking and
food preparation to interna- ional cuisine, edible gifts, entertaining family
and friends and exposure to careers in the hospitality industry. The
culinary classes support daytime learning and practical life skills through
integration of math (measuring ingredients and altering recipes), literacy
(reading recipes and directions), social studies and culture (preparation of
foods from around the world). We will also teach proper kitchen sanitation
and safe food handling as well as instill the importance of proper hand
washing techniques to prevent the transmission of food borne illness and
infection. Parent/family workshops are available in both Spanish and
English, covering bacteria education and safe food handling. According to a
recent study at Harvard University, more than 50% of food-related illness is
contracted in the home, not in public places. Parent training, in Spanish
and English, leading to ServSafe certification of completion is offered as
well.
Pre-qualify your school for a CSE club
grant…
All CSE clubs and representatives will help you organize an “Environmental
Awareness Day” and make presentations to students, parents and staff in the
District’s schools about the importance of maintaining a safe environment,
with the goal of helping everyone they come into contact with to engage in
safe daily practices and to become better citizens of the world. It
ultimately is a FUN FUND-RAISING DAY FOR EVERYONE.
